Storing Your Boat for the Winter
Unfortunately we can’t all enjoy warm weather all year long, meaning when the winter months roll around we have to make some preparations! For boat owners the winter months can be especially disheartening, but it’s important to have a storage plan in place so you can prepare. Our team at Hampton Watercraft & Marine is here to help throughout your boating journey, so we’ve made a quick list of things you can do to prep your boat for winter storage.
1. Cleaning
One of the first things to do is clean and dry your boat before storing it for the winter. Make sure to wipe down surfaces with a mild detergent, rinse off debris and dirt, and dry all interior spaces in order to reduce the growth of mildew or risk of rusting.
2. Waxing
Once your boat is clean, you’ll want to apply a layer of wax. This will help protect against damage from wind, rain, snow and ice if you have to store your boat outside. Wax can also be a protective layer from condensation buildup if you’re storing it inside a garage or shed.
3. Engine Care
If you have a boat with a motor, you’ll need to change out engine oil and replace fuel filters. It’s important to change out old oil to prevent clogs or corrosion that could occur during boat storage.
4. Batteries
Similarly, you’ll need to disconnect the boat's battery and store it in a dry location, as an attached battery can cause corrosion over time if left connected during storage.
5. Monitor Its Condition
Check your boat regularly for standing water or moisture to prevent any form of condensation that could cause damage from freezing temperatures during winter months. Checking on it throughout the winter can also deter rodents and insects from seeking refuge in your watercraft!
